Weeks 40-42

Estimated Reading Time: 3 minutes

Hooray! Congratulations on completing the fortieth and final week of your third trimester! You and your baby have reached the expected due date originally calculated at your first office visit in Week 8—an incredible milestone.
At this stage, your baby may measure around 18-20 inches in length and weigh between 6-9 pounds. Remember, healthy babies come in all shapes and sizes—short or long, lean or chubby. No matter what, every baby born safely alive and kicking is nothing short of miraculous!

If Baby Hasn’t Arrived Yet

If your baby has not arrived on time, please don’t be surprised or upset. Many moms have babies past Week 40; this is a crucial time during pregnancy as the amniotic fluid surrounding your baby is beginning to decrease and the placental function needed to sustain your baby’s life may be beginning to slow. You will need to discuss with your health care team the probability of when to expect your baby’s arrival or the possibility of planning your baby’s delivery day.

Now is the time to discuss with your healthcare team:

  • How long past your due date can you wait if labor doesn’t start on its own?
  • What additional monitoring will be required? Will tests like daily NSTs (Non-Stress Tests) or more frequent BPPs (Biophysical Profiles) be needed?
  • Is an induction necessary? If so, when and what does it involve?
  • What about a scheduled C-section?
  • What is your healthcare team’s overall plan and protocol?

Sometimes the birth plan doesn’t go exactly as planned or even desired. If your plan becomes altered, you should be educated and familiar with your options ahead of time. This will help ensure that you are comfortable making the very best decisions for you and your baby with your team.

Don’t forget to do your daily movement counting! If you notice any changes in your baby’s movement patterns, such as a decrease, increase, or absence in fetal movement, CALL your health care team immediately to make sure baby is well. If you are unable to reach or visit your health care team, go to Labor & Delivery or the Emergency Room. Do not wait until the next day or next appointment! Always trust your instincts.

A healthy outcome for you and your baby is paramount after the 40-week gestational marker has elapsed. Pay extremely close attention to any changes in your or your baby’s health; this is key. Contact your health care team at any time with any questions or concerns you have until your baby is safely in your arms.

Mama, you’ve got this!
